Might the government have a view, at least privately, about this issue? As the BBC is in some sense associated with the state and they want to preserve good relations with Trump they may put pressure on the BBC to issue both a formal apology (reasonable) and an offer of compensation (less reasonable). Such an approach may help to avoid BBC correspondents being disadvantaged in their access to White House sources.
