Chris Grayling, Michael Gove, Elizabeth Truss: this is not a list to inspire confidence in the idea that non-lawyers should do the job - but, then, neither does the list of lawyers inspire confidence in the converse proposition (I mean, Dominic Raab for heaven’s sake). So, I suppose the conclusion must be that it’s competence and effectiveness that should be the criteria wherever they may be found (as, indeed, DAG said)
